Road Trips: Vol. 3, No. 1 - Oakland 12/28/79 (2 CD + Bonus Disc)The latest installment in the Road Trips series, now entering its third big year (and ninth release overall) is bound to become a favorite. Road Trips Vol. 3, No. 1 is the complete show from December 28, 1979, part of the sparkling run that has already given us the excellent Dick's Picks: Vol. 5 (from 12/26/79). You'll recall that these year-end concerts, held at the Oakland Auditorium because Winterland had closed down for good the previous New Year's Eve, were the first holiday shows featuring new keyboardist Brent Mydland, who joined the band in April 1979. The new lineup had been gaining momentum with each passing tour since that spring, and by December was truly hitting its stride. It helped, too, that the band was in the midst of recording their Go To Heaven album, so they were really playing together a lot during this period. This 12/28/79 concert is a blast: a super high-energy rock and roll show that also has its share of spacey jams and exploratory passages.

OzlemTURKU's third full-length CD, Ozlem, evolved over a period of four years, following the release of "Nomads of the Silk Road" in 2000. The title track, Ozlem, was concieved by Ted Monnich at an annual Pennsylvania festival, Pennsic 29. Ted and Farzad composed its passionate arrangement, in a Tashkent hotel, while on tour in Uzbekistan in 2001, only a week before the World Trade Center disaster.
In the following years TURKU worked through the album's songs and arrangements while touring across North America. The resulting collection of songs is rememiscent of "Alley of Istanbul's," their first album, energy. Ozlem is heavy on Turkish melodies that speak to and inspire the soul. The word "Ozlem" in Turkish means "longing." The intensity and emotions of this album shine forth through its songs, eliciting a miriad of emotional responses from the listener. One thing is certain with TURKU, however. When they play, no one can ever sit still.

Back to Basics"Voluntary simplicity" has become a catch phrase for what seems to be a yearning for a simpler, more self-sufficient and economical way of living in the late 20th century. This book, first published in 1981 and recently updated, was probably many folks' first in-depth exposure to the idea of a simpler life, making things by hand, and enjoying a stronger sense of control over personal budgets, home projects, and lifestyles. Hundreds of projects are listed, illustrated in step-by-step diagrams and instructions: growing and preserving your own food, converting trees to lumber and building a home from it, traditional crafts and homesteading skills, and having fun with recreational activities like camping, fishing, and folk dancing without spending a lot of money. This book will have you dreaming and planning from the first page! -- Mark A. Hetts
